The Royal Society of Chemist’s Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) scheme came to visit St Chris this week as part of our enrichment program for our Sixth Form chemists.

A team of chemists from Cambridge University, headed up by Dr Glyn Williams, tasked our pupils with identifying a variety of substances using spectroscopic techniques such as IR (Infrared Spectrometry) and MS (Mass Spectrometry), topics which we have been learning about.

Our pupils were able to get hands on experience by collecting their own spectra and talking to real life scientists about their every day research and work. The students felt this was an exciting opportunity that was invaluable in broadening their understanding.
