Every now and then parents ask me to share my Morning Talks that we have with students. So, I thought I would pass one along this week. On Monday I spoke to the Senior School about the UN International Day of Peace, a theme that feels especially relevant given the world we are living in. I hope you enjoy reading it...
“Good morning,
Today is the United Nations International Day of Peace. It is one of those days on the calendar that can feel a bit abstract, a nice idea but somehow distant. So, I thought I would tell you a story.
When I was younger, I travelled in Rwanda and Uganda and the Occupied West Bank during some of their more troubling times. For a short while I worked in a refugee centre in Rwanda, spending most of my time with children who had been orphaned through a horrific and violent civil conflict in the most brutal ways.
Their childhood was seared by the things they had witnessed. They were living as the collateral damage of war. Some better than others. Several merely stared as if in a trance.
One boy said something to me that has stayed with me ever since. He asked me about my home – about the chairs, the tables and windows I had – did I have curtains. I asked him why and he said he couldn’t quite remember his home so wanted a new memory or vision. We chatted for most of the morning. And when I asked him about his dreams, they were not of wealth, or fame, or even of safety. He said, “I want to watch Barcelona FC on a TV screen in Kigali.”
Think about that. For him, peace was not about luxury or choice. It was about the chance to sit somewhere safe, to be a child again, and to watch a football match.
When you hear the word “peace” you might think of something impossibly big, global treaties, world leaders shaking hands, the end of all wars. But peace is also something small. It is a child watching a football match. It is a family eating dinner together.
It is the absence of fear.
That boy in Rwanda reminded me that peace is deeply personal. For him, peace was not a political document. It was the hope that one day he might sit in front of a television and feel normal again.
So, what can we do here, today, at St Chris, to live out peace? We can start small. In the way that we speak to each other. In how we listen, especially when we disagree. In choosing not to escalate arguments but to find a way through.
Peace is not the absence of noise or debate. Peace is the presence of respect.
The UN says that peace is built through compassion, cooperation and understanding. They add, that peace is built every time we make space for someone else to feel safe and heard.
And I want to finish with one more story.
In Liberia, another place I spent time, during a long and brutal civil war, a woman called Leymah Gbowee gathered thousands of women together. They were mothers, daughters, grandmothers, ordinary people. They refused to accept that war was the only option. They marched, they protested, they prayed, they sat outside the Presidential Palace until people listened. When peace talks between warring factions began to collapse, the women barricaded the doors and refused to let the men out until they reached an agreement.
In the end, their persistence and courage helped to bring peace to their country.
Gbowee later said:
"You can never leave footprints that last if you are always walking on tiptoe."
That is what peace requires. Not silence, not walking on tiptoe, but the courage to stand firm, speak out, and leave footprints that others can follow.
So on this International Day of Peace, remember the boy in Rwanda who just wanted to watch a football match. Remember the women in Liberia who would not tiptoe around war but stood together until peace was possible.
And ask yourself, what kind of footprints will you leave here, in your school, in your community, and in the world, and how will it shape us?
Thank you.
We will now have our Silence.”

We’re excited to launch the Junior Duke Award at St Chris, designed to build independence, confidence, resilience, and life skills in pupils.
Starting with Years 3–6, children can work towards Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum Awards by completing challenges in areas such as First Aid, ICT, Eco-awareness, Sport, Drama, and life skills like cooking or fire building.
Most challenges are completed at home, with support from family and friends, and each child who finishes their level will receive a certificate and badge.
The cost is £10 per level (covering booklet, badge, and certificate) and payment can be made via Evolve.
On Monday 29 September we have the first of our friendly, in-house galas this year, against King James Academy for swimmers in Years 7 & 8 (I & II Groups). This will be a great opportunity for swimmers to showcase their technique in different races. Details have been sent out to swimmers who may be interested in taking part and we look forward to confirming the team!
If your child is new to St Chris and we're not yet aware they would like to be included in our galas, please do get in touch with our Head of Swimming: jenny.white@stchris.co.uk
Please note there will not be a Senior Squad session that evening due to the gala taking place instead.
A recital for IV Group (Year 10) to Year 13 will take place next Thursday 2 October in the Theatre from 4:00pm-5:30pm. Last minute entries will be accepted on Monday if students want to let us know as there is still space.

Students in Nursery have been learning about Peace this week and have been demonstrating acts of kindness towards their friends. They particularly enjoyed creating a beautiful dove collage using a variety of white materials. |
K Group (Reception) |
At Forest School this week, Reception students were captivated by the bridge built by Year 2 during their session. This sparked a wonderful afternoon of imaginative play, with students balancing, climbing and navigating the branches. A fearsome ogre was soon found lurking underneath the bridge, and many brave rescuers were needed to save their friends from danger. |
J Group (Year 1) |
Year 1 began their week by stepping back in time, comparing their everyday lives to those of their grandparents in the 1950s. In Forest School, students enjoyed trying out swings crafted by older year groups. They quickly discovered the challenge of generating movement themselves, learning to use their bodies to achieve the momentum usually given by a helpful push. |
H Group (Year 2) |
To mark Peace Day, Year 2 reflected thoughtfully on the meaning of peace and harmony. Students created delicate collages of doves, each symbolising hope and calm. The activity gave them space for mindfulness and creativity, and the finished artworks carried a powerful message of unity. |
G Group (Year 3) |
In Topic lessons, Year 3 explored the world of the French artist Henri Matisse and his famous “painting with scissors” style. After learning about his life and work, students created their own abstract collages inspired by European landmarks. The results were carefully planned, imaginative, and a testament to their creativity. Families may like to ask students to explain the terms collage, abstract and landmark, and perhaps spot some European landmarks together at home. |
F Group (Year 4) |
Year 4 delved into Ancient Egyptian society this week, learning how the pyramid of hierarchy shaped everyday life. Students role-played different figures from Pharaoh to farmer, working together to decide where each person would fit in the hierarchy. Their thoughtful reasoning led to lively discussions about the importance of each role, and how these jobs compare with similar ones in our world today. |
E Group (Year 5) |
Year 5 students have been exploring the fascinating science behind the Earth’s rotation. Through a shadow experiment, they observed how shadows change not only in position but also in length throughout the day. This hands-on investigation brought to life the relationship between the Sun, the Earth and time, sparking thoughtful discussion and plenty of curiosity. |
Huge well done to the I & II Group (Years 7 & 8) swimmers who represented St Chris in this year's English Schools Swimming Association Teams Relay Gala. We entered a mixed team and entered both freestyle and medley events, coming 5th in both. But the win for us was having swimmers keen to take part in this 8-lane, 400-500-strong swimmer event - including swimmers who were at least head and shoulders taller than ours! We also had swimmers who have been reticent to participate in galas in the past, so it was an extra special event for that reason too. Well done to Milan, Kai, Merrie, Isla, and Toby for their great swims, camaraderie, and support of one another on the night.
We had a great start to the week on Monday as our III and IV Group (Years 9 & 10) football teams played against Kingshott school. It was a brilliant game for our IV Group who won convincingly 5-0, showing great teamwork and goal-scoring threat. The III Group team showed great reliance coming back from one nil down to beat Kingshott 4-2. A big well done to all involved!
Last Friday evening saw the return of our much-loved Alumni vs Students Football Tournament & BBQ. It was a fantastic success, and we were delighted to welcome back so many former students, who joined current pupils, staff and families for an evening filled with laughter, food and friendship.
Thank you to everyone who came along – it was a wonderful reminder of the the St Chris community.
