St Chris is seeking a Head of Drama (Maternity Cover, 0.7 FTE or open to discussion for additional hours) to lead and promote excellence within our vibrant department, which sits at the heart of school life. Drama at St Chris has a proud tradition of high-quality productions and an inclusive ethos that encourages every student to participate, whether on stage or behind the scenes, fostering creativity, confidence and collaboration through performance. The successful candidate will be a well-qualified teacher with QTS and a relevant degree, possessing the enthusiasm to inspire a love of learning and the ability to manage a team of dedicated staff. You will oversee a dynamic curriculum from Year 7 through to AQA GCSE Drama, as well as teach AQA A Level Theatre Studies and BTEC Performing Arts. Teaching is supported by excellent facilities, including a purpose-built theatre and a professional-standard dance studio. A central part of the role involves upholding the school’s rich history of exceptional productions, including major annual musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Chicago, Shrek, and Aladdin, while also supporting the wider life of the school, including our on-site LAMDA Examination Centre and the technical “Wombles” crew. The Head of Drama's responsibilities also include curriculum leadership, budget management, and contributing to the school’s pastoral and co-curricular programmes, ensuring Drama at St Chris continues to thrive creatively and academically. Meet Lydia Somerville, Junior School Forest School Teacher.
Throughout her 8 years at St Chris, Lydia has been a Year 2 (H Group) teacher, a Year 5 (E Group) teacher, and now leads Forest School sessions across the Junior School.
Ever since becoming the Junior School Forest School Teacher, Lydia has also been the Be Green lead in the Junior School and landed the School our Green Flag status this year with the help of the Junior School Eco Council; an enormous accomplishment!
Lydia loves working at St Chris, she said "I love the community feel of St Chris. If the Be Green team think of something we could work on to change and make more planet friendly, we usually get a positive, helpful response. Different teams across the school are keen to support us in aiding the school to become a more environmentally friendly place".
Meet Mike Li, Performing Arts Technician.
His ninth year at St Chris, Mike Li is a member of our Professional Services team, and his work is instrumental to ensuring all School events from the Junior School to the Sixth Form go off without a hitch.
Mike Li is a St Chris alumni (1994-2000) and, throughout his time in the education sector, found himself comparing the facilities to those at St Chris. "I found myself saying: "This place is really nice, but I wish it had this St Chris thing". Throughout all my jobs, I wanted to do more, and help more, and St Chris was the place I could do that".
When describing his job now, Mike says it's "hugely exciting. When you work in a professional TV set, for example, you know what you're going to get. When you're working with students you have no idea what you're going to get, and that's just as exciting as working on a professional set. My favourite thing is seeing them grow and develop; students at St Chris often come to us shy - and perhaps a little held back - and then grow to take on lead parts and being unphased by taking centre stage. Students that can be seen as 'naughty' or disruptive find their place here and they flourish".
Meet Alistair Phillips, Assistant Head (Pastoral Care).
Alistair joined St Chris in September 2023 with an ambitious mindset.
After moving to Cambridge, he took a job at Long Road Sixth Form College however, Alistair said, “While I loved working with Sixth Formers, it was such a massive place and the students are only there for 18 months, so you didn’t get to know any of them very well.” Alistair was attracted to St Chris because of its smaller size and its philosophy around knowing each child individually.
In his time at St Chris, Alistair is looking forward to “achieving a system where students feel supported from day one and throughout their journey. I want St Chris’s Senior School to be the top choice for our Year 6 students, and the Sixth Form to be the top choice for those in Year 11”.
