The Arts in the Junior School
A community where art and imagination thrive.
At St Chris, creativity is at the heart of our Junior School. We believe every student is an artist in their own way, and our aim is to create an environment where young minds are encouraged to explore, express, and appreciate the joy of artistic creation.
Our belief in the transformative power of the visual arts underpins everything we do. Art nurtures imagination, builds confidence, and helps students develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Within our well-equipped art studios, children are supported to experiment with a wide range of materials and techniques. From drawing, painting and sculpture to mixed media projects, the emphasis is not only on developing technical skills but also on nurturing a lifelong passion for creative expression.
Our carefully designed curriculum introduces pupils to a variety of artists, art forms and styles. Through hands-on experiences and guided exploration, students learn to find their creative voices and express their individuality. The colourful corridors of the Junior School proudly display artwork from every year group – from bold self-portraits to collaborative class projects. Each year, our Year 4 students take part in an end-of-year art exhibition, curating a personal portfolio inspired by different artists and movements.
Art Clubs
Creativity continues beyond the classroom through our wide range of lunchtime and after-school art clubs. Each term, students can explore new materials and ideas, with clubs designed to suit every age and stage.
For our youngest students, these sessions support fine motor skills and imaginative play through activities such as painting, playdough, air-dry clay and Hama beads. As students move through the Junior School, opportunities expand to include drawing, pottery, painting and collage clubs – all of which evolve each term to keep inspiration flowing.
Some students choose to attend art clubs several times a week, often working towards special projects such as submissions for the Royal Academy’s Young Artists’ Summer Show – a testament to their enthusiasm and dedication.
Recycled Fashion Show: A fusion of art and sustainability
One of the highlights of our creative calendar is the Inter-School Recycled Fashion Show, a long-standing St Chris tradition that will celebrate its 30th year in 2026. The event brings together creativity, collaboration and sustainability, challenging students to design and construct wearable art entirely from recycled materials.
Working individually or in small teams, students transform everyday items, from newspapers and crisp packets to delivery packaging and even live plants – into extraordinary costumes that tell powerful stories. The process develops design thinking, teamwork and an awareness of environmental responsibility.
The creations are showcased in a spectacular catwalk event featuring students from schools across Hertfordshire, with a panel of judges selecting winners based on creativity, craftsmanship and concept. Each year’s show centres on a theme – from “Truth to Power” (2020) and “Lights, Camera, Action” (2024) to “Express Yourself” (2025). The 2026 theme, “Alternate Realities,” promises to inspire another wave of imaginative and thought-provoking designs.
Following the show, all costumes are exhibited in a special sustainable fashion display in Letchworth town centre – a community celebration of art, innovation, and environmental awareness.
