A message from
Rich Jones, Head.
I’ve been roughly the same size since I was about seven. The class photos — and those terrible whole-school panoramas from the 80s — were not kind to me. If you can imagine a clumsier, more youthful Hagrid or Chewbacca, you’re in the ballpark. I often had to bring ID to get the child fare on the bus, and finding black school trousers that didn’t resemble Bermuda shorts was near impossible. I didn’t mind too much to be honest, though my 5ft1 mother found telling me off increasingly difficult as I towered above her.
There was, however, one upside to my size: rugby. I took to it like an unsophisticated oaf happily wallowing in mud. My role was simple: get the ball, tuck it under one arm, and run straight into anyone in front of me. Job done. My second was to stop the opposition doing the same. Add in a few “dark arts” (it was the West Country in the 80s), and a willingness to put my head where others wouldn’t, and I was set. I played for school and club quite comfortably.
One day, my coach pulled me aside and said I needed to develop my game — improve my passing, read the lines, sharpen my technique. He warned me I wouldn’t always be the biggest, and others were catching up fast. I nodded. So, for three weeks, we did 1:1 skills sessions. At the end of the third week, after a tough session, he put his arm around me and said, “Actually, Rich — there’s no point. Just keep smashing into people.”
So I did. For the next 20 years. Hence the limp. And the gnarly fingers.
All this came back to me at our Sports Awards evening this week — in what’s been a brilliant stretch of sport at St Chris, with Junior and Senior Sports Days being particular highlights.
What stood out to me most was the spirit of it all. Our approach to sport is about participation, effort and team celebration. That we value endeavour and ownership just as much as skill and talent is significant. But the magic, I think, lies in the fact that we don’t do this instead of developing skill and ambition — we do both. At St Chris, they’re not mutually exclusive.
It all comes back to our values: inclusive, celebratory, and ambitious. A blend that allows people to grow — sometimes in directions they didn’t expect.
One of the speakers last night said she’d never rowed before university. At school she was a musician, not a “sporty” type. A friend invited her along to the rowing club. She said yes. That small three letter word led to a 20-year love affair with rowing — and three World Championship titles.
But here’s the thing: to say yes, we must first feel secure. Confidence and openness come when inclusion and ambition are built on a strong foundation of self-worth. That’s the culture we aim to build — and it’s what makes events like Sports Day and the Sports Awards feel so authentically “us”. We have always found value with width and breadth, not exclusively height.
Like me with rugby in the Wild West, there’s room at St Chris for all shapes, abilities and interests — and long may that continue.
Although… I must say… I do question some of the ‘talent’ on display at the Junior School parent tug-of-war.
Deary me.

Junior School Sports Day |
---|
Our Junior School students, from Reception through to Year 6, enjoyed a fantastic morning of friendly competition and community spirit at this year’s Sports Day. Pupils took part in a range of energetic events including the Egg and Spoon Race, Beanbag Shuttle Race, Three-Legged Race, relays and a spirited tug of war – with some enthusiastic help from parents too! Field events such as long jump, javelin (with foam rockets!) and shot put added to the variety and excitement of the day. The sun shone throughout, creating the perfect backdrop for a morning of fun and teamwork. The event concluded with a relaxed picnic on the front lawn, a lovely way for everyone to come together and celebrate a joyful morning of physical activity. Thank you to all who took part and cheered from the sidelines, it truly captured the spirit of our Junior School community. |
Monte (Nursery) |
Monte (Nursery) had an unforgettable time on their trip to Bury Lane Beach. The children enjoyed lunch together and strawberry picking, with plenty of joyful beach play to round off their day. Back at school, elderflowers were the theme of the morning—smelling, tasting homemade cordial, and describing its sweet, floral flavour. Pond dipping proved popular too, offering opportunities to practise patience and care for living creatures. From learning bow and arrow safety, to building shelters in a sudden rain shower, this week’s outdoor adventures were full of thoughtful actions, independence, and imagination. |
J Group (Year 1) |
J Group (Year 1) were busy checking the progress of their broad bean plants and found plenty of small pods growing nicely. They gathered elderflowers and made their own cordial, enjoying a sweet sip of a K Group batch from a few weeks ago. While exploring the orchard, the children discovered newly hatched caterpillars on an apple tree branch and spotted plenty of bugs—a sure sign that the school grounds are teeming with biodiversity. The children also shared their top tips for pond dipping and enjoyed free play, sparking new learning and discovery at every turn. |
F Group (Year 4) |
F Group (Year 4) explored weather recording during Forest School this week. Children used thermometers, anemometers, and cloud observations to make real-world links to their science learning. They also discovered how to use the sun to find south and track wind direction. Knot untying became a group challenge, with shared strategies to build perseverance. Maya treated the class to homemade cornbread and there was time for creative play as well. Earlier in the week, F Group also took part in an exciting workshop called Creative Me, where they learned how both sides of the brain help us retain knowledge through fun, movement, and creativity. In less than an hour, they collectively learned over 60 new facts—an incredible achievement! |
E Group (Year 5) Science Workshop & Morning Talk |
Last week E Group (Year 5) hosted 10 pupils from Pixmore School for a morning packed with science fun in the Senior School. The experience began with a mesmerising 360° Cine Dome journey to the edge of Earth and space. Next came a rocket-building workshop, complete with sticky fingers and colourful personal designs. After a break, the children explored the school’s animals before launching their rockets into the sky. Despite the wind, all launches were successful—an inspiring end to a collaborative, curiosity-driven morning. |
D Group (Year 6) |
D Group (Year 6) spent time preparing for their transition to Senior School with a friendly Q&A session hosted by Deputy Head Students, Abi and Archie. The session provided valuable insights, practical advice, and reassurance for our Year 6 pupils. Having familiar faces to look out for in September made a world of difference, and we’re so grateful to Abi and Archie for their thoughtful support. |

Senior School Sports Day
Tuesday saw our Senior School students come together for a truly joyful Sports Day – a celebration of teamwork, energy and good-humoured competition. Despite the changeable weather, spirits remained high!
Pupils took part in a wide range of activities, from Diamond Cricket, Rounders and Volleyball to some old favourites, including the Egg and Spoon Race, Beanbag Race and Three-Legged Race. There was plenty of cheer (and some impressive balancing!) in the more playful events like the Wheelbarrow Race and Piggyback Race, which added to the fun of the day.
The event was a wonderful reminder of the camaraderie and house spirit that runs through our community. Every student contributed to the joyful atmosphere, whether they were competing, cheering on their peers, or supporting behind the scenes.
Congratulations to Lytton House, who emerged victorious this year – a well-deserved win! A huge thank you to all staff and students who made the day such a success.
St Chris IV Group (Year 10/11) Cricket Team Bow Out with Pride in District Final
It’s been a busy and exciting week for the St Chris IV group cricket team. On Monday afternoon, we faced Highfield in the semi-final of the District League. The team put in a fantastic performance, confidently chasing down 83 runs in just 13 overs to secure our place in the final.
The final took place on Wednesday afternoon against Thomas Alleyne's. Having played TAA earlier in the season, we knew we were up against a very strong side. Our bowlers rose to the occasion, limiting them to 143 runs in 20 overs – a brilliant team effort, with a standout performance from Henry who took an impressive five wickets.
Although we weren't able to chase down the total, it was a spirited effort and a performance to be proud of. A huge well done to everyone involved, and a special thank you to our IV group players. As this marks their final season representing St Chris in cricket, we’re incredibly grateful for all they've contributed – helping the team reach two consecutive district finals is no small feat!
I Group (Year 7) outing to Hampton Court Palace
I Group (Year 7) enjoyed a fascinating trip to Hampton Court Palace this week, stepping into the world of Henry VIII and exploring key moments from the Tudor period. During a guided learning session, pupils were taken through the grand rooms of the palace to discover how and where significant religious decisions were made. It was a powerful way to bring their history studies to life, deepening their understanding of the Reformation and the impact of monarchy on the Church.
I Group (Year 7) Interhouse Swimming Gala
I Group (Year 7) came together on Monday for their much-anticipated Interhouse Swimming Gala — a brilliant display of team spirit, determination, and progress. Every pupil who swam in individual races achieved either a Personal Best or a Speed Time Award, which is an outstanding reflection of their hard work this year.
The 'Anything Goes' races were a highlight, with inventive combinations of strokes — from butterfly kicks paired with breaststroke arms to front crawl arms with breaststroke legs — showcasing impressive coordination and creativity!
A huge well done to everyone who took part, and special congratulations to Gernon, who took the top spot with 69 points, followed closely by Lytton in second place and Godwin in third.
Inspiring Talk from Economist and Governor Ana Nicholls
This afternoon, our IV Group (Year 10) students had the privilege of attending a talk delivered by school governor Ana Nicholls. Ana is a senior economist and Industry Director at the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), part of The Economist Group. With over 18 years of experience, she leads global research and forecasting across sectors such as healthcare, automotive, energy, and consumer goods. She regularly contributes expert analysis through reports, media appearances, and international events.
Her engaging talk offered students valuable insights into the world of economics and communication, while also highlighting key skills to support their language and analytical development ahead of upcoming examinations.
It was a brilliant and inspiring session, and we are incredibly grateful to Ana for generously sharing her time and expertise.
