St Chris Leads the Way in Stevenage and North Hertfordshire GCSE Performance
We are delighted to share that St Christopher School has been ranked top in North Hertfordshire and Stevenage for GCSE performance this year - outperforming all local state and independent schools in the latest government data. published by the Department for Education earlier this month.
According to the Department for Education’s Key Stage 4 statistics, St Chris achieved the highest Attainment 8 score in the area - the national measure used to reflect a school’s overall academic performance across eight key subjects, including English, maths, sciences, humanities and languages.
As a non-selective school, we are especially proud of this achievement, which highlights both the school's academic strength across a breadth of subjects and the inclusive nature of our community.
About Attainment 8
Attainment 8 reflects how well students perform across eight key subjects, including English, maths, sciences, humanities and languages. Each grade is given a point score, and these are totalled and averaged to give each school’s overall figure.
Attainment 8 scores can reach a maximum of 90, with this year’s national average standing at 45.9 - roughly equivalent to students achieving grades between 4 and 5 (standard to strong passes).
St Chris School’s Performance
At St Chris, our strong academic outcomes continue to shine through these national measures. St Chris outperformed all local schools with an average Attainment 8 score of 58.2.
Our provisional GCSE results for 2025 show:
- 43% of grades at 9–7 (A*/A equivalent)
- 81% of grades at 9–5
- 94% of grades at 9–4
As demonstrated by the Attainment 8 score, students excelled across a wide range of subjects, including:
- French: 100% 9–7
- Spanish: 86% 9–7
- Music: 83% 9–7
- Chemistry: 80% 9–7
- Art: 68% 9–7
- More than half of students in Physics, Biology and Further Maths achieved the top grade 9.
These results reflect not only the hard work and perseverance of our students, but also the strength of an approach that values every child as an individual.
Head of St Chris, Rich Jones, said: “We are incredibly proud of these results, and of our students for the commitment and perseverance they have shown to achieve them. As a non-selective school, we are always keen to emphasise the breadth and diversity of our students’ achievements. It is especially pleasing to see more students than ever reaching the very highest grades, all while taking an active and fulfilling part in life beyond the classroom.”
These results also reflect our belief in knowing each child as an individual - encouraging them to discover their passions and achieve excellence in ways that are meaningful to them."
