Hello and welcome to
St Chris.

St Chris is an outstanding, modern independent school with an important progressive heritage. St Chris has been – from its very inception in 1915 – acutely aware not only of the world around it, but the direction in which that world was travelling. The best word we have for that is ‘progressive’. It’s not perfect, but then no-one is.

What does the future of learning really look like?

As the incredible transformation of the world through the 20th Century played out, we were amongst the first to see that humanity, understanding, kindness and ‘progress’ must be the pillars on which education – and childhood – should stand. Where others were demanding silence, we were listening. Where others were fixated on results, we were valuing the process. A great many features of a ‘modern education’ have their roots in schools like St Chris. Today, our education is formed around three things:

All of this, and more, has been the beating heart of St Chris since 1915. Others have followed – and we’re glad that they have – but we are still progressing, still innovating, still watching and listening to the world around us to guide what we do and how we do it. Science

Our science curriculum is embedded across the school from a child’s first day in the Junior School. We have a cohesive subject offering across the school and our community of science teachers across our schools support one another. We offer combined and triple science GCSEs and Physics, Biology, and Chemistry A Levels. Students studying science at St Chris can expect an immersive practical educational approach, engaging in multiple assessed and non-assessed practical experiments throughout their studies to see the science live in action!

 

Nursery Junior Senior Sixth Form

Drama

The outstanding theatre and drama studio facilities at St Chris help to bring students’ creative ventures to life. Students studying Drama A Level can create their own drama pieces for their exams, and GCSE students enjoy the confidence gained by performing independently or in a group. Our Drama club is very popular with students and forms a supportive community of students across the Junior School and Senior School. Students studying drama, and indeed those who have an interest in it, can take part in the School’s annual musical theatre and drama productions. Students have the opportunity to undertake leading or supporting roles or be technical assistants working behind the scenes!

Sport

Our school’s attitude to Physical Education is encouraging participation for every student regardless of their interests. We are proud of our supportive and accessible community in sport, which encourages many of our students to pursue sport competitively. Our football, basketball and swimming teams perform very well, particularly in the Senior School, at district and national level. Students enjoy the camaraderie of joining a sports team regardless of their chosen subjects of study. Recently, we’ve been building up our fixtures in the Junior School and are proud to host increasing numbers of local primary and junior schools on our sports pitch for these games.

Art & Design

Art is integral to our creative approach to learning and is encouraged across all years, starting in the Junior School. Students in the Junior School can submit artworks to the Junior School exhibition which is attended by members of our community each year.

We have a very comprehensive programme of GCSE and A Level Art and Design options for students. For students who have not studied Art and Design at GCSE, we offer an integral foundation element of the A Level programme which is undertaken with the students’ studies to help them feel supported and confident in their choice. Art and Design is a relished and popular choice at our School; our students create outstanding artwork which is displayed across several local museums. Several of our alumni have graduated to become successful creatives and thoroughly enjoyed the practical aspects of building a portfolio.

Humanities

At St Chris, we have an outstanding Humanities departments who help our students get to grips with subjects which generate excellent transferrable skills. Our English Literature programme at A Level is a popular choice with our Sixth Formers and enables them to critically examine historical and upcoming texts; modern foreign languages are taught as part of the curriculum until Year 10, where students can continue or drop the languages; History and Geography explore the contexts of the world around us and use learning to apply to real-life situations. Our Humanities classrooms reside in the same building, decorated with displays of recent trips, and those who take Humanities subjects at GCSE or A Level can expect to take part in exciting field trips to further their knowledge.

St Christopher School is set amongst a 25-acre campus based in the leafy town of Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire. Like the town, St Chris is stooped in heritage, while maintaining a modern and forward-thinking focus. Students at St Chris can commute easily from London and Cambridge and our surrounding towns and villages including Harpenden, Hitchin, Baldock, Stevenage, and North London.

We have excellent facilities including modern IT suites, an on-site 25-metre indoor heated swimming pool, an Ecocentre housing animals, a ceramics studio, and photography dark room.

Junior School

Our Junior School is an integral part of the larger St Chris community, a place where children aged 3 to 11 embark on a transformative educational adventure.

Senior School

The Senior School is a journey to independence, and our Adviser system is the driving force behind allowing our students to flourish.

Sixth Form

Nestled in its own dedicated space, the Sixth Form Centre at St Chris is the hub of Sixth Form life. Boasting common rooms for Year 12 and Year 13, study areas, a serene garden, a communal kitchen, and specialized classrooms.

Boarding

St Chris boarding is a popular option offering a “home away from home” for students aged 11 to 18 years, who can choose to board on a full, weekly or flexi basis.
