Beyond the curriculum
Experiences outside the curriculum improve knowledge, independence and self-confidence.
For many years, groups of staff and Sixth Formers from St Christopher have travelled to the Indian desert province of Rajasthan to assist with development and educational projects. The aim of these projects, which are available to all Sixth Formers, is to provide them with essential life skills, raise their awareness of global issues and to give them an opportunity to contribute constructively to sustainable solutions.
The School has well-established links with various organisations in the area. Each year, two groups of staff and Sixth Formers spend a fortnight (in December or February) working with these organisations, experiencing life in rural India and teaching in various learning camps. Preparation for the visit includes learning some Hindi, developing teaching skills and fundraising.
These experiences are often described as ‘life changing’ by those who take part. We employ a Jaipur-based coordinator who helps us to organise our programmes and she accompanies the groups during the visits.
Community service programme
Through our community service programme there are also local opportunities to develop other life skills.
