Creative and performing arts

We offer students exciting and stimulating opportunities in the arts.

Learning creative skills

Art and design

Art and Design is popular and well established at St Chris and pupils regularly achieve entry into the most prestigious Art colleges. We have also once again received the Arts Council Artsmark Gold Award for our high quality provisions.

In addition to art and ceramics studios, the department has a dedicated computer suite, two darkrooms, Sixth Form studio spaces, a gallery and lecture theatre. All A-level students have their own individual work area and the department organises regular art appreciation trips, including visits to Paris and Florence.

Craft, design and technology (CDT)

CDT is housed in the modern, purpose-built Design Centre that includes a computer suite and computer aided manufacturing area. The department emphasises a high standard of craftsmanship and the development of good problem-solving skills. Computer aided design and manufacturing are part of the curriculum.

Visitors are always impressed by the variety and high quality of pupils’ examination project work, which can range from furniture to jewellery to electronic devices.

Drama is popular, both as a curriculum subject and as an extra-curricular option.

The School benefits from a purpose-built theatre and a fully-equipped drama and dance studio. There are regular productions and GCSE and A-level students stage public performances to fulfil their course requirements. Visiting theatre companies hold workshops and performances. Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in the work of outside companies such as the National Youth Theatre and Hertfordshire County Youth Theatre.

The School’s Music Centre consists of teaching, practice and performance spaces set around a central courtyard.

A team of experienced instrumental teachers delivers a diverse range of individual lessons and is fully involved with many aspects of the School’s rich musical life.

The department benefits from a dedicated music technology suite and this is taught throughout the School.

In addition to regular teaching, we offer many extra- curricular opportunities for pupils including orchestras, jazz bands, singing groups and a number of small ensembles.
