It's all in the name......

Is the Educational world finally catching up with us? (I do hope so!)
Helen Fraser seems somewhat threatened and unsettled by the notion that children should call their teachers by their first names (Telegraph 14 May 2014). She seems to imply that it would undermine authority and lead to ill-discipline. Well, I am pleased to report that the opposite is true.
At St Chris all of the children and all of the teaching and support staff (and Governors) are called by their first names. The sense of purpose, behaviour and care for each other is simply outstanding and is commented on by all that visit, including the Inspectorate.
We are about to celebrate our Centenary and Universities, Employers, Old Scholars and Parents past and present tell us that the use of first name terms is very important in establishing relationships based on mutual respect and trust rather than on techniques of command and control that are prevalent in many schools. The fact that we have no school uniform also contributes to the success of our children and the happiness of our School.
It really is time that Schools started to combine care for the individual with forward thinking rather than relying on archaic traditions of the past to lock everything down so that over precious egos within false hierarchies are preserved.
