ISM_GCSE_2017-Gold-BlackSt Christopher School has been awarded a Gold Certificate by the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM).

This means that more than 20% of all of the school’s GCSE students achieved an A* to C in GCSE music, putting the School in the top 76 schools in England.

Head of St Chris, Richard Palmer said: “We’re really proud of our music department at St Chris. This is the second year running that we have achieved this award, and it reflects our commitment to music throughout our students’ time at the School.

“From nursery onwards, students have a dedicated music teacher for their class and plenty of performance and music making opportunities in morning talks and through co-curricular activities.

“In Year 2 in the Junior School all children learn to play either the violin or ‘cello as part of their timetabled lessons, and following that we encourage children to have lessons with one of the many specialist instrumental teachers at the School.

“This commitment to music from an early age means that by the time our children reach GCSE level, many are passionate about music and achieve excellent results, and that our school concerts are popular for both participants and audiences alike. For example in March students from our jazz band performed in a concert alongside professional musicians Justin Thurgur and Dele Sosimi at Hitchin’s Club 85.

“Congratulations to our students, our Head of Music, Martin Goodchild, and to our excellent team of music teachers who do so much to support the passion and enthusiasm of the young people we teach.”

Deborah Annetts, Chief Executive of the ISM – the professional body for musicians – congratulated the School, saying: “We are delighted to recognise St Christopher School’s achievement in music and celebrate the commitment to music education shown by the school in their high uptake and high achievement of pupils.

“Music is a valuable subject: It brings value in itself to pupils as well as supporting achievement in other subjects. Music also opens doors and generates educational opportunities for pupils from all backgrounds. We are delighted that St Christopher School values music within their school curriculum and, as the professional body for musicians and a subject association for music education, we are delighted to recognise this high level of achievement with this certificate.”
